GGSN (Gateway GPRS Support Node)

Today, mobile subscribers receive access to their e-mails, Internet, mobile TV, video-on-demand services (VoD), instant messaging and all other multimedia services through mobile broadband connection.

Operators have to install scalable packet core network components that can operate durably and continuously with high level of reliability and serviceability, which can process a very high capacity of data traffic, to meet such requirements of mobile subscribers.

Cisco’s GGSN solution running on ASR5000/ASR5500 platform has been the choice of the most innovative 3GPP network operators in the world which have installed GSM, UMTS, HSPA Networks. Cisco GGSN can meet the requirements of operators with the hardware that can bear a great amount of data traffic over itself by outdistancing their competitors. With the reliability and serviceability provided by Cisco GGSN, the mobile operators focus on subscriber services that provide the highest revenue for them without hesitating about the structure of packet core.

Cisco GGSN acts as a gateway between IP-based networks such as operator’s packet core network and Internet or package-based networks. Located at the center of mobile packet core network, GGSN performs all the tasks such as service policy application, network protection, security wall, quality of service (QoS) application for the subscribers and such as instant pricing for pre-paid subscribers and such interaction with billing systems, deep package processing (DPI).

As Cisco ASR5000/5500 hardware can support SGSN and GGSN synchronously, maximum efficiency can be taken from the boards and processors being used. At the same time, the network architecture is simplified and the delays that may occur between the components are minimized.

A unique application technique is used at Cisco ASR 5000 platform. Thanks to this technique called “in-line” service, GGSN has the ability to deeply follow session in carrier traffic plane. Therefore, content-conscious services per subscriber can be defined on GGSN. The defined task will run so that they will not cause any delay which cannot be noticed by the subscriber and the session will run so that it will not be affected at any time.

Cisco’s in-line services offer the followings using the deep package review and smart traffic redirection techniques:

  • Advanced traffic monitoring, measuring and pricing (using standard Radius, Diameter, GTP and GTPP protocols),
  • Detection, control and optimization of P2P applications,
  • Network-based traffic optimization application; therefore, ability to provide quality of service (QoS) according to the volume, life cycle, time and type of traffic,
  • Status-controlled security wall
  • Content filtering, white/black listing for parental control

Main features and benefits of GGSN:

  1. Network management per subscriber can be performed by deep session monitoring and content-conscious applications can be configured.
  2. Standard Radius, Diameter, GTPP protocols can interact with pricing and billing systems.
  3. All tasks can be applied without any delay and service interruption.
  4. It can be run on a single platform synchronously with SGSN and, if required, 4G network components.
  5. High value in-line services enhance the revenue facilities and network efficiency and provide flexible opportunities for the operator.
